PROFESSIONAL VISIT

A ½-day combined professional visit of two major French institutions is proposed to the ISMIR attendees on the afternoon of Tuesday, 15 October 2002 . It is free but available to a limited number of people on a first-come first-serve basis (on-site registration).

Inathèque de France (à Web site)

The Institut National de l'Audiovisuel is a public organisation with an industrial and commercial role (Etablissement Public à caractère Industriel et Commercial or EPIC) that was set up through the reform of the audiovisual sector conducted in 1974 and finally implemented on 6 January 1975.

The State establishes the general legislative, regulatory and financial framework within which INA accomplishes its missions. It has the power to supervise its activities through the presence of State representatives and members of parliament on the Board of Directors, through questions to parliament, inquiries and reports.

This is the first public venture to have signed a contract setting out its goals and the resources available to it with the State (coming into effect a few months before the law of 1 August 2000 was voted relating to freedom of Communication). INA has the following main missions:

·         Preservation of the national audiovisual heritage

·         Using this heritage to the full and making it more readily available

·         Keeping abreast of changes in the audiovisual sector through its research, production and training activity.

The visit will include the following presentations:

·         INA (Institut national de l’audiovisuel) and its missions.

·         Its projects on audiovisual indexation and the activities of GRM department (Groupe de recherches musicales, à Web site).

·         The documentary system of the Inathèque.

·         The Hypermedia Studio of INA.

The audiovisual department of the French national library (à Web site, under “New technologies”)

A new and highly effective system for audiovisual and multimedia searches is in place at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. This tour will include a visit of the underlying infrastructure used for the collection, preservation and access to ca. 1 million audiovisual documents:

·         145 multipurpose workstations for patrons.

·         Robots and jukeboxes.

·         Servers, including a massively parallel one serving over 1.2Tb of data.

·         Ethernet and audio/video networks.
